Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen with a Medcom propulsion system won the Bus of the Year 2025 title

The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen-powered bus was named Bus of the Year 2025 by the jury of the international Bus of the Year contest. This is a historic achievement, as this is the first time a hydrogen-powered vehicle has won the award. The bus is equipped with a propulsion system designed and engineered by Medcom.

The award from the International Jury of the Bus of the Year contest was presented on September 16 at the IAA Transportation show in Hannover, and the statuette was received by Javier Iriarte, CEO of Solaris. The Solaris Urbino 18 hydrogen bus is distinguished by its advanced hydrogen technology, which allows it to travel up to 600 kilometers on a single refueling without any emissions, making the vehicle a sustainable and efficient solution for modern public transportation. The bus is equipped with a Medcom propulsion system that uses silicon carbide (SiC) technology, consisting of a traction inverter, a DCDC fuel cell inverter, and a battery charger.

“Solaris’ success is all the more significant because this is the first time a hydrogen-powered bus has been awarded the Bus of the Year title. We are glad that Medcom is part of this project and we congratulate our partner not only on the statuette, but also on taking a strategy related to zero-emission urban mobility,” says Piotr Wroński, vice president of Medcom. “For several years, we have been emphasizing that the market for low-emission urban transportation will continue to grow, and the next natural step in its development will be hydrogen-powered vehicles. Medcom already has the technology required to manufacture 100% zero-emission urban vehicles in Poland, and has successfully completed projects in this area, including the hydrogen-fueled propulsion systems for trolleybuses in Riga, as well as the propulsion system for Solaris Urbino 12 hydrogen buses,” he adds.
