The Municipal Transport Company (MPK) of Poznań will buy twenty new bidirectional Moderus Gamma trams from Modetrans. This is a continuation of the 2023 contract for the purchase of ten such vehicles. All trams will be equipped with Medcom power electronics: auxiliary converters, traction inverters, and a TCMS.
Almost a year ago, MPK Poznań purchased ten Moderus Gamma bidirectional trams, with an option to buy 20 more depending on the availability of funds. This year the company is utilizing this opportunity, which will bring a total of 30 modern trams with SiC power electronics from Medcom to Poznań.
“This is yet another order from the Municipal Transport Company of Poznań for trams with Medcom power electronics, including solutions in silicon carbide (SiC) technology. The first one, placed back in 2018, was for thirty unidirectional and twenty bidirectional trams. The current contract is not only a tremendous honor for us, but also a confirmation that our solutions work perfectly in daily operation and are effective in terms of utility and economy,” said Piotr Wroński, vice president of Medcom.
Under the contract with Modertrans, Medcom will equip thirty more bidirectional trams for Poznań with auxiliary converters in the full SiC technology (PSM-50 SiC), traction inverters in the IGBT technology (FT-50-600), and a TCMS system.
“We have designed one compact solution for Moderus Gamma trams to power traction motors and auxiliary circuits in trams, and this is another project that confirms the uniqueness of the silicon carbide technology. By using it, we have reduced the size and weight of the converter, which we placed in one container together with four inverters. Each manufactured tram will be equipped with two such containers, which have the additional advantage of an exceptionally quiet cooling system,” explained Piotr Wroński. “The use of the silicon carbide technology has allowed us to achieve significantly performance in terms of efficiency, operating temperature, switching speed, and output voltage stability while reducing the weight of the unit, reducing the number of wires, and saving space on the roof of the tram,” he added.
The purchase of new trams by MPK Poznań is a matter not only of expanding the fleet, but also of adapting to the growing needs of the city. The new bidirectional vehicles are both to serve new routes and to replace the oldest trams.
