Energy-efficient electronics on the rise. Medcom increases production capacity and employment.

The year 2025 brought impressive revenue growth for Polish companies in the railway industry. Strong demand for rolling stock presents a major opportunity for domestic manufacturers, but also a challenge driven by the situation in the components market. By the end of last year, Medcom recorded a revenue increase of more than a dozen percent, and its current order backlog guarantees the company stable growth until 2030, allowing it to plan its activities over the next decade, up to 2040.

Employment and Production Capacity Growth

Growing market interest in energy-efficient power electronics was noticeable over the past year both in the railway sector and in urban transport. To meet market expectations, Medcom increased its workforce, production capacity and inventories of components already in the second half of last year. Similar investments will continue in 2026.

In the coming months, Medcom’s equipment will be installed, among others, in additional electric multiple units and locomotives manufactured by Newag from the Griffin MSU and Dragon 2 families, as well as in the latest Pesa vehicles, including the Gamma Dual Power 111 DE dual-mode locomotive and trams for Chorzów and Kraków. In the tram segment, further projects are being carried out with Modertrans and the Turkish manufacturer Bozankaya.

At the same time, Medcom continues deliveries of converters for Talgo trainsets, tram and railcar converters for Siemens in the United States, and converters for Stadler passenger coaches destined for Kazakhstan. Several trolleybus orders are also in production, including a contract for Solaris for vehicles to be delivered to Vancouver, Canada. Power electronics from Poland will also be installed in metro vehicles produced for Sofia, Istanbul and Cairo.

Energy Efficiency Will Remain in High Demand

– High energy costs are shaping market behavior, and we are the only company in the world offering power electronics based on silicon carbide technology on such a large scale. This is particularly important in Europe, which is consistently focused on reducing energy consumption – explains Paweł Choduń, Vice President of Medcom. – Moreover, operators are paying increasing attention to the total cost of fleet maintenance. Therefore, in the coming years we expect growing interest in vehicle modernization using SiC technology, as well as in systems for recovering and storing braking energy. One factor that has supported not only us but the entire industry is undoubtedly access to financing. Thanks in part to EU funds, we now have a record number of orders for new vehicles in almost every market segment, including the niche trolleybus sector – adds Paweł Choduń.

Devices based on silicon carbide (SiC) technology already account for more than 70% of Medcom’s production. Last year, Medcom’s engineers used SiC technology for the first time in a multi-system converter for high-speed rail, making it possible to meet the stringent design requirements of Talgo trains manufactured for Deutsche Bahn. Medcom is also successfully implementing a new generation of modular propulsions for electric buses, designed for Solaris.

Challenges in the Components Market

The dynamic growth in demand for Medcom’s solutions requires a significant increase in inventory levels, because despite improvements in the electronic components market after the pandemic period, extended delivery times still pose a challenge for the industry.

Our suppliers serve not only our sector. Growing investments in renewable energy sources and data centers are generating enormous demand for semiconductors and other components. To ensure production growth, we must intensively expand our supplier base and increase inventory levels. We began this process many months ago, which has allowed us to increase sales, but the situation in the components market is still not stable.
